women and girls in Afghanistan getting splashed with acid

this is a horrific trend, and yet another sign of the ugly world we live in.

this time, a father refused to marry his daugher to an older man. the result: the family gets sprayed with acid, and two are now near death.

what does it mean when men go to such lengths? is it not problematic enough that a father can ‘give away’ his daughter? now women have to fear death if they don’t submit to the will of another man.

Sad, sad, sad. You can read the whole story here.

‘make any girl do anything’

let’s think past the obvious wrongs of this ad.

is anyone else bothered by women being constantly referred to as ‘girls’? it’s constant verbal subjugation, and it is stuck in the vocabulary of my of us. by calling a woman a girl we make her smaller and weaker being. similarly, in places like South Africa where racism is ever present, black labours of rich and white people, often men into their 50s, will be called ‘boys’. they, as well as women, continue to be put down.

we cement inferiority with our words.

fight vocabulary.
