Emma Goldman (June 27 [O.S. June 15] 1869 – May 14, 1940) was an anarchist known for her political activism, writing and speeches. She played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the twentieth century.
Born in Kovno in the Russian Empire (present-day Kaunas, Lithuania), Goldman emigrated to the US in 1885 and lived in New York City, where she joined the burgeoning anarchist movement.[1] Attracted to anarchism after the Haymarket affair, Goldman became a writer and a renowned lecturer on anarchist philosophy, women’s rights, and social issues, attracting crowds of thousands.[1] She and anarchist writer Alexander Berkman, her lover and lifelong friend, planned to assassinate industrialist and financier Henry Clay Frick as an act of propaganda of the deed. Although Frick survived the attempt on his life, Berkman was sentenced to twenty-two years in prison. Goldman was imprisoned several times in the years that followed, for “inciting to riot” and illegally distributing information about birth control. In 1906, Goldman founded the anarchist journal Mother Earth.
In 1917, Goldman and Berkman were sentenced to two years in jail for conspiring to “induce persons not to register” for the newly instated draft. After their release from prison, they were arrested—along with hundreds of others—and deported to Russia. Initially supportive of that country’s Bolshevik revolution, Goldman quickly voiced her opposition to the Soviet use of violence and the repression of independent voices. In 1923, she wrote a book about her experiences, My Disillusionment in Russia. While living in England, Canada, and France, she wrote an autobiography called Living My Life. After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, she traveled to Spain to support the anarchist revolution there. She died in Toronto on May 14, 1940, aged 70.
During her life, Goldman was lionized as a free-thinking “rebel woman” by admirers, and derided by critics as an advocate of politically motivated murder and violent revolution.[2] Her writing and lectures spanned a wide variety of issues, including prisons, atheism, freedom of speech, militarism, capitalism, marriage, free love, and homosexuality. Although she distanced herself from first-wave feminism and its efforts toward women’s suffrage, she developed new ways of incorporating gender politics into anarchism. After decades of obscurity, Goldman’s iconic status was revived in the 1970s, when feminist and anarchist scholars rekindled popular interest in her life.”Emma Goldman

what a shame

MMA is a grueling sport, and in my opinion its the most complete. Its mind-blowing how talented, strong, and disciplined the athletes in that sport are.

In the last decade women have begun to make real headway in Mixed Martial Arts, a sport which has become more and more super-hyper-masculine. This is beyond…

So far has female presence in the ring come that on April 28th there is going to be an 11 fight ever – all of them female. I think this is wonderful.

In the same breath what I find dreadful is how, like everything else that women do, it has to be sexualized. GSP isn’t laying under feathers -Anderson Silva isn’t posing in thongs. I hope this stops immediately, but like everything else like this, I sadly doubt it will.

Facebook: making life suck a little more for teenage girls

This is a really interesting article. More of these are needed. Check out the full article here.

Here is a snippet from it:

“Girls are working this out every day on Facebook. When they collectively post and comment, I think they are grappling with these issues in the way they can best. They acknowledge the reality of the situation that thin and pretty are important (sexy is really good, too), while trying to be supportive and complimentary, to offset the negative consequences of being held to this ridiculous and fetishized ideal of contemporary female beauty

*Eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression are the most common mental health problems in girls.
*59 percent of 5-12th grade girls in one survey were dissatisfied with their body shape.
*20-40 percent of girls begin dieting at age 10.
*By 15, girls are twice as likely to become depressed than boys.
*Among 5-12th graders, 47 percent said they wanted to lose weight because of magazine pictures.
*Health risks accompany girls’ drop in self-esteem due to risky eating habits, depression, and unwanted pregnancy.
*Girls aged 10 and 12 (tweens) are confronted with “teen” issues such as dating and sex, at increasingly *earlier ages. 73 percent of 8-12 year-olds dress like teens and talk like teens.”

Gulabi gang
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gulabi gang (from Hindi gulabi, “pink”, transln. “pink gang”) is a group of women vigilantes and activists originally from Banda in Bundelkhand district, Uttar Pradesh, India,[1] but reported to be active across North India as of 2010.[2] It is named after the pink saris worn by its members.
The gang was founded in 2006 by Sampat Pal Devi, a mother of five and former government health worker (and a former child bride), as a response to widespread domestic abuse and other violence against women.[3] Gulabis visit abusive husbands and beat them up with laathis (bamboo sticks) unless they stop abusing their wives.[1] In 2008, they stormed an electricity office in Banda district and forced officials to turn back the power they had cut in order to extract bribes.[4] They have also stopped child marriages and protested dowry and female illiteracy.[2]

The group, which the Indian media portray positively, was reported to have 20,000 members as of 2008, as well as a chapter in Paris, France.[1]

A movie called “Pink Saris” has been made about them, directed by Kim Longinotto and premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in 2010 [5].

In January 2011, the gulabi gang helped a girl who had been raped by Purushottam Naresh, the local MLA from the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party. When the girl went to file rape charges, she was arrested under trumped up charges[6]. The girl’s father approached the Gulabi Gang for help[7]; eventually the MLA was arrested[8].”

Women in Egypt will not stand down

This is inspiring…

“Thousands of people have filled the streets of the Egyptian capital in protest against the beating of female protesters by the ruling military during clashes in and around the city’s Tahrir Square.

Female activists had called for Tuesday’s demonstration to denounce the attacks on women and call for an immediate end to violence against protesters.

The rally came hours after Egyptian security forces clashed with demonstrators in the capital on the fifth day of fighting that has left 13 people dead and more than 650 others injured since Friday.

The clashes sparked condemnation against the military among many people in Egypt, particularly after one incident in which two Egyptian soldiers were filmed dragging a woman protester on the ground by her shirt, exposing her underwear, then clubbing and stomping on her body.

One of the women at Tuesday’s protest said the country’s military council only cared about holding on to power.

“The reason for the protest is the picture and the video that was published by news services around the world, and it showed us to what extent the military council has no qualms about trampling on the women of Egypt and the girls of Egypt, and has no qualms about beating them up and stripping them naked,” Islama Thabet told the Reuters news agency. ”

The Perfect Vagina: a documentary, and scary sign of the times.

This documentary is quite interesting, but even more sad. Pressure on women or conform to a certain image is higher than ever. Teenage girls are not happy with their vaginas. One has to wonder what they have to base this on, or what they have to compare to? More often than not, the only comparison is what is shown in sexual media; magazines, porno, or what have you. That being said, there are now girls out there who measure-up not only their breast and waste size, but also their private parts next to those of porn-stars. This is just one of the disturbing thing you learn from this documentary. If the trend goes on, you can expect your daughter, sister, or even mother to maybe one day believe that her privates should meet the knife.

Playboy and poverty.

This personal observation blew my mind and made me quite sad.

I volunteered as a camp counselor for 5 days – it was a fun get away targeting children between 8 and 16 from impoverished communities in Cape Town, South Africa. On the final day of the camp, one of the camp leaders pulled out a box filled with various lost and found items which accumulated over the weekend. She pulled out the items one by one in front of the 20-odd youth at the camp.

One of the first items was a hat. No one claimed it. Then came the t-shirts, shorts, a couple of pair of underwear, water bottles, and so on. A few of the items were claimed. It wasn’t that exciting for the kids.

Then there was massive irruption in claim of ownership of the item. Almost all the kids were screaming “IT’S MINE!” or ” ME! ME! ME!”. The items was a key chain with the iconic Playboy Bunny symbol attached to it.

women and girls in Afghanistan getting splashed with acid

this is a horrific trend, and yet another sign of the ugly world we live in.

this time, a father refused to marry his daugher to an older man. the result: the family gets sprayed with acid, and two are now near death.

what does it mean when men go to such lengths? is it not problematic enough that a father can ‘give away’ his daughter? now women have to fear death if they don’t submit to the will of another man.

Sad, sad, sad. You can read the whole story here.

‘make any girl do anything’

let’s think past the obvious wrongs of this ad.

is anyone else bothered by women being constantly referred to as ‘girls’? it’s constant verbal subjugation, and it is stuck in the vocabulary of my of us. by calling a woman a girl we make her smaller and weaker being. similarly, in places like South Africa where racism is ever present, black labours of rich and white people, often men into their 50s, will be called ‘boys’. they, as well as women, continue to be put down.

we cement inferiority with our words.

fight vocabulary.
